Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving. Thank YOU.
11/20/2012

I can think of no original and creative way to start, so start anyway, I will. . .

Pediatrics is not simply a job or a career for me. It is a vocation, perhaps even an avocation.

A calling. A responsibility. A burden. A privilege.

There are joys so full I think my heart might literally burst with them. There are sorrows so deep I dare not give voice to them. And truths so exactly true and so generously shared I can only pray for the strength to honor them.

As I begin this blog here in this season of thanksgiving, I feel led to share just such a truth. It is a truth I have always known and continue to learn over and over again as my life flies by. Say what you need to say. Take the opportunity whenever it comes to express your heart over your loved ones. Create the opportunity if you must and so today, I want to try to SAY just how thankful I am for the children and families at Blackmon Pediatrics. I GET to spend my working life practicing the art and science of caring for these young ones. I have the great honor of walking with parents as they make their ways along the sometimes blind path of raising families. And I have had the blessing of being both the first and last doctor a few of my patients have ever seen. I have received so much more than I have ever given.

To say thank you to my families doesn't even begin to touch the surface of my gratitude. My prayer is that somehow, in some small way, God use me to reflect His great love and compassion. That I would be ever aware of how precious each child and parent is in His eyes. That I would recognize daily that it is only because of His love and grace that I get to say, "I have the best job in the world."

Happy Thanksgiving. Thank YOU.

Dr. Abby
